Gothic Haruhi Cosplay by Mizuno Shiro – 2d vs 3d vs… 3d-ish?

I would put Haruhi in the section of.. pretty darn hard to cosplay.. Wouldn’t you?  Mizuno Shiro attempted it recently wearing Haruhi’s gothic outfit. Let’s do a simple comparison from the  cosplay, the Figurine, and the actual picture from the artist.

Being one of my favorite drawings of Haruhi and crew(mmm Black and white dresses?), looks like a tough dress to come by.. in America anyway..

.. and of course, the figure.  Which looks amazingly gorgeous.. not in my collection yet :(

For some odd reason.. those eyes are FREAKING ME OUT.  Is that overdoing it with photoshop? or.. WTF.. seriously?  Looks like they took her eyeballs and replaced them with marbles.

I like the dress.  Looks pretty damn identical to me.  Lets look at some bigger shots..  did i mention..MY GOD THOSE EYES.  Anyone else notice the turtle snout goin’ on there too?  Wow, I am really a horrible person.

Those shoes are WAAAAYYYY off Mizuno.  Give those things back to Dorothy.. she needs to get home.

Again with those shoes *rolls eyes*  At least the socks look pretty good.   Also, at this distance, at least you cant tell those eyes look ridiculous.. wait.. I lied.

That’s better.  She is very pretty here :)  .but… the… shoes….

I’ll end her cosplay with the soul-deforming eye-stare.

Overall, the cosplay is not that bad.  The dress is really nice and I dig it.  Maybe if she wasnt so DAMN PHOTOSHOPPED it would be even better.  My favorite of the bunch>  The figure of course.  I’ll keep the 3d-ish part of haruhi thank you very much.  Her eyes don’t make me feel like I am being sent to hell at least.

Which do you prefer?

    This dress is beautiful. Like any cosplay though, it's a little further from the original image than I would have hoped. Less lace, please. Maybe the artist was lazy and just didn't draw it as lace, but... I think the entire dress would look better if that were solid black trimming, not lace. And the multi-colored rhinestones? Eww. The corset ought to be longer... why do I keep seeing her tummy?! The lace just ruins it for me. Ugh, lace. Don't get me wrong - it's a beautiful dress. But the more I look at it, the less it looks like Haruhi's dress.

    I tend to find that looking like Haruhi is not terribly difficult... managing to capture her personality, however, is. Mizuno Shiro seems to capture her slyly mischievous, almost coy personality. But none of that boisterous, bossy attitude that Haruhi is famous for. I want to see both sides before I call it a good cosplay.


    My pick is the figure. It has the most energy and detail in it - and it captures Haruhi's spirit amazingly well.

    I'd be curious to see some cosplay of Asahina and Nagato with those outfits. Mhmm... <3
